Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

Discover one of Welshpool’s highlights and plan your visit.

Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is a historic narrow-gauge steam railway running through the beautiful countryside of Mid Wales. Opened in 1903, it originally carried passengers and goods between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion.

Today, visitors can enjoy a scenic 8-mile journey behind a traditional steam locomotive, travelling through rolling farmland, woodland and along the River Banwy. The journey offers a relaxed way to experience the Welsh countryside at a slower pace.

The main station in Welshpool features a small museum, shop and café, making it a great starting point for families and railway enthusiasts alike. Special event days run throughout the year, including themed trains and seasonal experiences.
