Powis Castle

Discover one of Welshpool’s highlights and plan your visit.

Powis Castle

Powis Castle sits high above Welshpool and is one of Mid Wales’ most impressive historic landmarks. Originally built around 1200 as a medieval fortress by a Welsh prince, it was later transformed into a grand country house. Today it is cared for by the National Trust and welcomes visitors from across the UK and beyond.

Inside, you’ll find richly decorated rooms, historic paintings and textiles, and the famous Long Gallery. The castle also holds an important collection of artefacts connected to the Herbert family and their links to India in the 18th century.

The real showstopper for many visitors is the garden. The dramatic terraced layout, with its towering yew hedges, is one of the finest examples of its kind in Britain. From the terraces you can enjoy sweeping views across Welshpool and the Severn Valley.
