Discover one of Welshpool’s highlights and plan your visit.

Fishing in the Montgomery Canal

The Montgomery Canal offers peaceful coarse fishing in a beautiful waterside setting in the heart of Welshpool. The canal is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and provides a popular location for both local anglers and visiting fishing enthusiasts.

Fishing is available from Bridge 119a at Maes y Dre Footbridge to Bridge 115 at Heulwen Wharf, with species including perch, roach, pike, tench, carp, rudd and bream.

The canal also includes disabled access fishing facilities, helping make the waterway accessible to a wider range of anglers. Nearby parking is available at Welshpool Town Centre, Flash Leisure Centre, Corfields Bridge and Rhallt Bridge.

Permits are available from the Welshpool Information Centre in Vicarage Gardens. Anglers must hold a valid permit and Environment Agency licence and fish in accordance with Montgomeryshire Angling Association rules and Environment Agency regulations.
