Domen Castell

Domen Castell, also known as Welshpool Motte and Bailey, is one of the town’s most important historic landmarks. Standing above the town, the site offers a fascinating glimpse into Welshpool’s medieval past and the origins of settlement in this part of the Severn Valley.

The Motte and Bailey Castle at Welshpool dates back over 900 years. Believed to have been built in the late 11th or early 12th century, it was established as a Norman fortification to control movement along the Severn Valley and the borders between England and Wales.

Today, only the earthworks remain, but the distinctive shape of the motte and surrounding bailey is still clearly visible. The site is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and forms an important part of Welshpool’s early history.
