The Welshpool Cockpit is one of the best-preserved cockfighting arenas in Britain. Built in the early 18th century, it is a rare and unusual piece of local history tucked away just off the town centre.
The circular stone building once hosted cockfighting events, which were a popular (though now outlawed) form of entertainment at the time. Its tiered seating and enclosed design give visitors a clear sense of how events would have been staged.
Today, the Cockpit is an important heritage site that offers a glimpse into a very different chapter of Welshpool’s past. Though small, it is well worth a short visit for those interested in unique and lesser-known historic buildings.
