The Montgomery Canal is 33 miles in length from Newtown in Powys to Lower Frankton in Shropshire.Part of the Severn Way makes use of the tow path between Newtown and Welshpool as does the Sustrans Cycle route from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury. Glyndwr’s Way finishes beside the canal in Welshpool.
A popular circular walk takes in Powis Castle and the Montgomery Canal and is approximately 4 miles in length. It starts at the entrance gates to Powis Castle Park (just off the high street) and takes the walker to and around the castle before joining the canal and finishing back in the town centre.
This walk and others are available in a handy book published by Kittiwake and available in Welshpool Tourist Information Centre.
