The Montgomery Canal is 33 miles in length from Newtown in Powys to Lower Frankton in Shropshire.Part of the Severn Way makes use of the tow path between Newtown and Welshpool as does the Sustrans Cycle route from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury. Glyndwr's Way finishes beside the canal in Welshpool.
A popular circular walk takes in Powis Castle and the Montgomery Canal and is approximately 4 miles in length. It starts at the entrance gates to Powis Castle Park (just off the high street) and takes the walker to and around the Castle before joining the canal and finishing back in the town centre.

The Canal hosts an annual Triathlon along the canal consisting of cycling, walking and canoeing. Details can be found at: www.montgomerycanal.me.uk/mwrt.html
From Easter through to the end of September Canal Boat Trips are available at Weekends. The trips last about two hours, light refreshments are available, there are toilets on board and all the boats are disabled friendly. Private hire for special occasions can also be arranged.
